My name is Alice Kim, and I am a 5th year student at UBC majoring in Computer Science.
I decided to major in CS because I love to be challenged, and the projects I get to work on could impact millions of people around the globe.
Right now, I'm working as an intern at Google.
The Department of Computer Science at UBC offers a directed study opportunity in collaboration with CANOSP. I worked on Predictive Text Studio which is a simple web-based interface for creating dictionaries to provide predictive text and autocorrect facilities on smartphones for less-resourced languages, along with two other passionate individuals mentored by Eddie Antonio.
Small businesses have a harder time competing in the market to keep their businesses alive, but they have been hit especially hard during this pandemic. This app will act as a platform to connect small business owners who have a need for services to available volunteers.
One common hurdle for food banks is the lack of consistent donations – there is usually a rush of donations around the holiday seasons which tapers off quickly. Our goal is to gamify the process and "level up" users as they donate, so that it will incentivise consistent donations. We built a mobile app for active donors to check for the inventory status at a local food bank.
